Some of the first universities to be built in the world were African, these include the University of Fez (859 AD), in Morocco and the Univeristy of Timbuktu(1327AD) in modern day Mali. These were institution of higher learning focussed mainly on the Islamic sciences, as well as medicine, astronomy, mathematics and language. Timbuktu had a student population of 25,000 in the 15th century. Hundreds of thousands of manuscripts can still be found throughout West Africa.
